Real Couples // A Private Quaker Ceremony in a Tree: Darren + Elyse

Real Couples // A Private Quaker Ceremony in a Tree: Darren + Elyse

With a small wedding of only our closest family present in mind, we then had to decide the type of ceremony we wanted. Neither of us is particularly religious so we didn't have strong ties to a specific wedding tradition. My mother however, is a member of the Society of Friends Church, or the Quaker church. She is considered a ‘convinced friend' — someone who joined the church rather than being born into a Quaker family. Through her, I learned about the elements of a Quaker wedding and thought that they would be perfect for our own ceremony. Quaker weddings, like all of their services and ceremonies, are not led by a priest or minister. Weddings are led by the bride and groom themselves. This appealed to us because it put the focus solely on our relationship. This part of the wedding was only possible because we were married in Pennsylvania, one of the few states that allows couples to marry without an officiant, know as a ‘self-uniting ceremony’ (Elyse's family is from Pittsburgh and her mom was the one who tipped us off on the choice).

Wedding Inspiration // Royal Blue + Metallic Gold

Wedding Inspiration // Royal Blue + Metallic Gold

Styled shoots are all about creativity and the spinning entree choice was such a cool way to present your guests their menu options. On top of that, our model's bolero is removable, making it the perfect way to transition from a formal ceremony to a more laid back reception! And for colder wedding months this is the perfect accessory to add a bit of warmth! It's funny because we originally planned on a sunny styled shoot, so at first when we saw the wash out weather we were mortified, but I think all in all the rain really added to the intimacy and portrayal of the couple, proving that a rainy wedding day can still be just as gorgeous, if not more!

#yesallcookies // Bourbon Espresso Snickerdoodles

Good afternoon! And welcome to a cookie chronicle that will go down in history as the best thing to happen in 2017, due to lack of competition. Just kidding. I'm hoping we see lots of beauty, love, resilience, and badassery in the days ahead — things much more important than cookies. But for the days we don't/can't see those things, I'm here for you. Who am I, you ask? (You didn't, but since I'm the one writing this, it really doesn't matter what you are and are not saying.) I'm a little baker based in Virginia who loves butter, Beyoncé, Michelle Obama’s arms, Michelle Obama’s everything, Drake’s feelings, superheroes, anti heroes, graphic novels, black excellence, spirituality, cheese, dranks, ice cream, “me time,” and these pants I got from Costco that look like real pants but are actually basically yoga pants. And I come with cookies.

Real Couples // A Family African Engagement: Val + Lawrencia

Real Couples // A Family African Engagement: Val + Lawrencia

Val proposed to Lawrencia on Valentine’s Day 2013. They were not considered officially engaged until July of 2015, when their families came together to pay and accept the dowries, and their ceremony traditions were performed. Val and Lawrencia met in April 2009 shortly after Val came to the U.S. Val’s sister had just given birth to her first child, and Lawrencia went with a friend to visit her. Val recalls exactly what Lawrencia wore that day and was immediately attracted to her, although he made no attempt to ask her out. Within moments of being introduced to each other, they had an in-depth conversation about their passions, goals, values and future endeavors, and they quickly discovered they had a lot in common.

Real Couples // Intimate Poe Museum Wedding: Ben + Christina

Ben and Christina had moved from their hometown Richmond to San Francisco three years ago, but they wanted to celebrate the most intimate part of their wedding in their native city surrounded only by their closest family, and Teddy, of course. I am so happy they did; I just adore this couple and everything about this wedding day. It’s not the typical all-day wedding affair. It was simple, stress free, exactly how they wanted it, and oh so beautiful. A new favorite for sure!

Real Couples // Spring Frost Engagement: Sally + Sophia

Real Couples // Spring Frost Engagement: Sally + Sophia

Sally and Sophia are two incredibly fun and in-love individuals who made the trek [twice] to Charlottesville from their home in Washington, DC. Due to some crazy winter temperatures (10 degrees, plus 20 mph wind chill) we ended up postponing the original session date and, instead, met up for a delicious brunch at The Clifton Inn. Many amusing stories were told, along with much discussion over some recent movie theater experiences.

Real Couples // A Matching Pair: Joe + Joey

Real Couples // A Matching Pair: Joe + Joey

Joe and Joey met in a nontraditional way through an online app. They had talked to each other for a month before meeting up and totally clicked when they learned that they share a mutual love for all things pharmacy. It was on a whim that they decided to meet for their first date, and in full first date fashion, trying to impress his date, Joey decided to not wear his glasses. Unfortunately, that completely backfired because the menu was on the wall. He thought he had just made a fool of himself but Joe simply laughed it off and said, "How cute are you?" In that moment, Joey realized he could be completely himself around Joe, and they have been inseparable ever since and will officially be tying the knot on October 1st, 2016 in Richmond, VA.

Real Couples // A Washington, DC Affair: Diana+Monroe

From a photographer's perspective, most weddings are fairly difficult, both mentally and physically, and we're usually completely exhausted at the end of the day. However, Diana and Monroe proved to us that weddings can be easy. Though their wedding day started early (8am) and we had a wedding the night before (something we never do), we happily and effortlessly cruised through their day while they smiled, laughed, and celebrated with a very intimate crowd of about 25. The shared exchanges of joy were endless, the weather was perfect, and their day ran like a well-oiled machine thanks to the team of Taylor and Hov.

Real Couples // Downtown Norfolk Mural Elopement: Molly + Tricia

Real Couples // Downtown Norfolk Mural Elopement: Molly + Tricia

Tricia and Molly met and fell in love in an unconventional and completely 21st century way: on an online dating website. They shouldn’t have met, but their combined fates could not be stopped by the 10 mile radius set by Tricia. They decided on a small wedding at the Norfolk Courthouse to keep the most important people involved in their wedding day, opting for immediate family only. Tricia recalls the day of the ceremony being stressful yet glorious. One of Molly’s favorite moments was on the way to their honeymoon in the Outer Banks, rocking out to Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, their unofficial wedding song. Tricia’s favorite moment was having dinner with their families, while enjoying the aura of love. Currently, Molly is an Auto Damage Adjuster and Tricia is a banquet server by day and rockstar bassist by night for the band Blue Ribbon. They live in the Ghent neighborhood in Norfolk, Virginia with their cat ShiShi.

My happiest place is around a table with wine, home-cooked food, friends and family in abundance.

Real Couples // Love + Zen: Alexa + Stephen

Real Couples // Love + Zen: Alexa + Stephen

Alexa and Stephen are totally awesome. Alexa is a petite and meditative (with a Buddha-like personality) woman from Puerto Rico. She has an awesome Brooklyn accent, and wildly amazing hair. Stephen is originally from Washington state, and is funny and quirky, and still knows how to rock a paperboy hat and suspenders. Their energy from day one of knowing them was rooted in just being, and loving and it shows. Best of all, they were so real, top to bottom. They met while working together at Ruby Tuesdays in Virginia Beach, and fell in love. What is more real than that? Their wedding was crazy fun, and felt like a true celebration of not only their love, but their families as well. They blasted traditional Puerto Rican music far into the night, danced their butts off, and belted in Spanish with fist pumps in the air.
